How to Read a Liquidity Heatmap: Order Book Depth Over Time
An order book snapshot tells you where liquidity sits right now. A heatmap adds the dimension that matters: time. It shows where liquidity has been sitting, building, and vanishing — turning the order book from a photo into a film.
What you're looking at
A liquidity heatmap samples the order book on a fixed interval and paints each price level by the volume of resting limit orders there. Cool, dark colors mean thin liquidity; bright, hot colors mean dense clusters. Stacked over time, horizontal bright bands emerge — walls of resting orders — and the price line threads between them.
The key mental shift: candles show what traded; the heatmap shows what's waiting to trade. Support and resistance stop being lines you draw and become liquidity you can see.
The patterns that matter
Persistent walls
A bright band that stays at one price for hours is real resting interest. Price approaching a persistent wall tends to slow down — and if the wall holds while aggressive orders chew into it, that's absorption, often a strong level to trade against.
Pulled liquidity
Watch what a wall does as price approaches. A wall that disappears just before contact was never meant to be filled — that's the signature of spoofing, and it changes the read entirely: apparent support was actually bait. On a heatmap, pulled liquidity shows as a bright band that abruptly ends without price ever touching it.
Liquidity gaps
Dark zones with almost no resting orders. Price moves through gaps fast — there's nothing to slow it down. A breakout into a gap tends to travel until the next bright band; that band is your natural target.
Magnet levels
Large visible liquidity attracts price — market makers and algos route toward size. A massive wall slightly away from price often gets tested even when the trend points elsewhere. Traders call these magnets; heatmaps make them visible.
A practical reading workflow
- Locate the two or three brightest bands above and below price — that's your map of the session.
- Judge each band's age: liquidity that has persisted for hours outranks liquidity that appeared minutes ago.
- When price approaches a band, watch its behavior, not its size: holding and filling = real; vanishing = spoof.
- Cross-check with aggression: a wall holding against rising CVD pressure is a genuine battle worth watching.
